Durga, almost ready to bless Delhiites

Delhi: The hard work of several artisans who make their way from West Bengal to Delhi to make Durga finally comes to a concluding stage as the festival of Navratri is here. The Durgas in West Delhi Kalibari are dressed, painted and all decked up to bless the people across Delhi and beyond. The popular Durga Puja Pandals of Dakshinayan (sector 4) and Aikotan (sector 4) in Dwarka are also getting their Durga idols getting made here.

On a recent visit, the artisans were seen rather relaxed, going about their day slowly. While some take paint brushes in their hands to draw the enchanting dramatic eyes of Goddess Durga, others were seen putting hair on the head of the goddess. After finishing their work in a couple of more days, these artisans will go back to their homeland on Saptami (the seventh day of Navaratri), the day Durga Pandals are opened to the public. The sheer irony of their work is that even after spending more than three months giving life to Goddess Durga, they never really attend any Durga Puja. However, they have no regrets about it. As Shivankar Chitrakar, an artisan from 24 Pargana (Sundarbans), West Bengal blissfully puts it, "It is our time to get some sleep."
