Over the last year, India witnessed the death of many celebrities from sudden cardiac arrests. These include actor Siddharth Shukla, stunt director and producer Raj Kushal, and actor Amit Mistry from the Hindi and Gujarati film industry.

Dr Anil Dhall, a senior cardiologist, says a silent heart attack is one where symptoms may not be recognized. A person might be having a heart attack but the nature of the ailment is such that it goes unnoticed. This makes it very dangerous. It can go unrecognized in diabetes as the pain nerve gets damaged.

What is a silent heart attack?


A silent heart attack is so normal that it has no symptoms, mild symptoms or symptoms people don’t connect to a heart attack. It goes unrecognized many times and could be diagnosed weeks or months later when a healthcare provider finds heart damage.

Heart attack can occur when our heart is not getting enough oxygen-rich blood to function and which leads to injury of the heart, it is also known as, myocardial infarction. Usually, a blood clot causes a heart attack by keeping blood from flowing through one of your coronary arteries.

The World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that India accounts for one-fifth of all non-communicable diseases (NCD)-related deaths worldwide and most of these deaths are reported in the younger population.

The Global Burden of Disease study stated that the cardiovascular disease (CVD) death rate in India is 272 per 1,00,000, which is significantly higher than the global average of 235. Around 2.63 million Indians died from CVD in 2017, which was the leading cause of death in the country as well.

When can a heart attack occur?
Heart attacks can happen when we’re asleep or awake. They can happen when:

  • Heart attack can occur at any point in time if you are unhealthy.
  • When we are very physically or emotionally stressed.
  • We suddenly become more physically active.
  • Bout of extreme cold atmosphere

What can cause heart attacks?

  • An unhealthy diet is a major reason for heart damage.
  • Being overweight.
  • Not exercising regularly.
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Bad cholesterol
  • Family History of cardiac disorders
  • Stress
  • Tobacco

Symptoms of silent Heart Attack
Dr Anil Dhall says people have no symptoms unless an ECG report detects a heart attack. There can be some symptoms like pain in areas including the jaw, neck, arms, back and stomach and sore muscle, indigestion, and cold sweats.

What can we do to reduce the risk of a silent heart attack?

Having a healthy diet because the stomach is the root of every disease

  • At least do some healthy exercise or yoga for half-hour.
  • Stop the use of products like tobacco or cigarettes or drinking.
  • Meditate for at least 10 minutes for stress control
  • Manage your weight and be healthy.

How to react if you are having a heart attack?
If you find out that you are having a heart attack, then sit in a chair and contact the hospital where primary angioplasty can be done. They will give you an aspirin and even you can keep half a Sorbitrate tablet under your tongue.
