Keeping your lungs healthy is one the most important and still overlooked part of your well being. Lungs help in delivering oxygen to the cells of the whole body and thus, protecting lungs helps in improving your overall health.  Every year, November is marked as the 'lung cancer awareness month' to spread awareness about lung cancer and educate people about its prevention.

There are a few ways that can help you to take care of your respiratory system without putting work into it-

Stay fit and fine: Exercise is an important aspect of staying healthy and active. Exercise helps in improving blood circulation and muscle strength. Focus on breathing exercises to enhance the functioning of lungs. You can also consider yoga.

Quit smoking and tobacco: You must have noticed tobacco advertisements and packages mentioning warnings like 'hazardous for health'. This is because smoking or consuming tobacco infused products can lead to mouth cancer, heart disease, lung disease, diabetes and a lot more. For healthy lungs, you should quit smoking as it can lead to several hazardous diseases.

Maintain hygiene: Keep your surroundings and yourself neat and clean. Remember to sanitize your hands properly before meals, take special care during flu season as infections can weaken your lungs. You should also disinfect your personal belongings like mobile phones, headsets to keep germs away from your body.

Decorate your home with some greenery: Add indoor plants in your living room to improve the air quality and oxygen level. Do this especially during winters as we spend less time outside and due to less ventilation.

Consume healthy: Healthy diet helps in maintaining overall health, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, low levels of certain nutrients have been linked to a number of lung diseases. To keep your lungs healthy and fine, consume vitamins like C,A,E and minerals like zinc, potassium and magnesium. You can also consume anti-inflammatory food like turmeric, cherries, and blueberries to reduce the inflammation of airways.

Stay hydrated: Drink one gallon of water everyday if possible. Staying hydrated helps the naturally secreted mucus remain thin which accumulates in your lungs everyday.

Accept the new normal forever: Always wear your 'mask' whenever you are going out. This way you can keep yourself and your loved ones away from any type of infection and pollutants.

Keep your lungs clean: Mucus can sometimes accumulate in your lungs and lead to blockage. Blockage causes difficulty in breathing and infections therefore it is important to keep your lungs clean. Once can drain out the mucus with different techniques and steaming with doctors recommendation.
