Dwarka- Hanging and laying wires posing threat to commuters and pedestrians

Cable and internet wires hanging overhead and lying on the roads have become a public nuisance in Dwarka. Such wires can be seen across the city along the roads and hanging loosely by street light poles.

In many places, these wires are over the heads in the middle of the roads and could be a cause of accidents mainly for bikers. A net of wires can be seen just above the master plan roads in the city. In some places, the wires have meshed in such a way that they could trap a pedestrian or biker. At chowks, wires can be seen laying on the ground at dividers and zebra crossings.

MK Singh, Secretary General of the Federation of RWAs, Sector 9 (FORWAS) and a resident of Sector 9 says, “Such hanging wires are not allowed anywhere but here mostly the cable and internet wires are seen hanging haphazardly along the central verge of the roads and even over the roads. You can see them all across the city.”

Such wires are prominently visible along major master plan roads like 201, 202, 205 and the internal roads in sectors as well. Such wires are found hanging above the central verge of the roads with the support of the street light poles or trees etc. President of RWA, Radhika Apartments, Sector 14 Surendra Mishra says, "You can see such wires at the signals of Sector 13/14 in front of Om and Kautilya Apartments Sector 14. They are hanging low and even lying on the ground. This may cause an accident.”

Wires are seen lying on the roads at major chowks. Mostly, the wires seem to be kept by the operators deliberately so that they could use them anytime. But the wires are inviting danger to the pedestrians and the commuter on the roads near chowks as anyone could tangle in them and fall. At some of the places, the wires have been kept on the ground just in the middle of the zebra crossing. Sanjay Singh a resident of Sector 5 says “Wires lying on the roads near chowks are very dangerous. Once I fell at Ashirvad Chowk getting trapped in a wire lying at the zebra crossing. Shockingly, neither the DDA nor the Municipal Corporation has taken this seriously. They should make the roads safe by removing such wires.”

People in civic bodies like DDA, MCD and BSES said that the cable operators and the internet service providers and operators mainly use their poles without permission. Also on a road due to multiple jurisdictions of civic bodies, things do not get resolved.

Community people said that the practice of using the infrastructure of DDA, SDMC and BSES by the private cable and internet operators is known to them but they do not take action. “Recently a few months back a campaign too was flashed in WhatsApp groups of residents and authorities that DDA horticulture was removing such wires, but looking at the ground it could be said that nothing effective happened,” says Nidhi Gupta, Vice President of All Dwarka Resident Federation (ADRF) and a resident of Sector 10.

On the subject, Senior General Manager, Street Light, BSES, Dwarka, SK Dagar says, “Such practice is done by private cable operators and internet operators. We take action for our poles and clean those wires. Also, we have written a letter to MCD and DDA for their jurisdiction to take the subject into concern. Such hanging wires are not allowed and could be dangerous.”
