I'puram: Gaur Green Vista residents demand for a height barrier

Residents of Gaur Green Vista, a society in Nyay Khand 1, Indirapuram, want a height barrier to be installed to prevent heavy vehicles from plying on the service lane parallel to NH 24. The service lane acts as the main approach road to the society.

Residents and AOA members of the society said the movement of heavy vehicles on the road was a constant threat to children, senior citizens and residents in general.

"There is a rush of heavy vehicles from the adjacent national highway as vehicles often use the service lane in order to avoid traffic," said Lokesh Parashar, an AOA member. "The condition is especially bad during peak hours." In November, residents, along with Ghaziabad Traffic Police, organised a drive against the movement of heavy vehicles on the road.

Residents had approached Rajesh Kumar, SP traffic, Ghaziabad, for a solution. Kumar wrote to GDA's vice-chairman, saying a field survey conducted by them had indicated that a height barrier would make the area safer for residents. The SP also stressed that the barrier would prevent traffic congestion in the vicinity of the society.

City Spidey took up the matter with Chakresh Jain, GDA's superintending engineer. Jain said the service lane in question played an important role in diverting some of the traffic from NH 24 during peak hours. "Even if we consider their request and instal a barrier, it will only mean that the already-crowded highway will be even more congested than it is now," said Jain.

In a similar case, residents of Ahinsa Khand 2 have also been demanding for a height barrier on an arterial road over the past few years. Residents, however, are still waiting for the barrier to be installed. According to GDA officials, the work could not be carried out as villagers from the nearby Kanauni village were resisting the installation. "We had, in fact, installed the barrier but it was dismantled within a day," said the officials.

In the absence of the height barrier in Ahinsa Khand 2, residents continue to be plagued by severe dust pollution as a result of the plying heavy vehicles through the area.
