A businessman was robbed of Rs 20 lakh in new notes by three men when he came to exchange the money with Rs 24 lakh in old currency in Sector 6, Noida, on December 13.

Vikas Bisht, a resident of Delhi, came to house number D-37 in the sector with a woman. He went there to meet Lalit Wadhva, the owner of a water plant company, for the transaction. Bisht would have made a profit of 20 per cent of the amount (Rs 20 lakh) in the exchange.

Bisht told the police that Wadhva asked him to show the new currency soon after he entered his office. When Bisht put the cash on the table, two men, who posed as an income tax officer and a police officer, entered the room. On suspecting foul play, Bisht ran away from the spot with his friend and approached Noida police on December 14 to lodge a complaint.

According to the police, the two men were Wadhva’s accomplices in the crime and have been identified. One of them is a sub inspector in Ghaziabad while the other is an employee of SBI bank in Noida. The money has not been recovered yet.

Dinesh Yadav, SP (city) of Noida, told City Spidey, “A complaint has been registered and the police has arrested Wadhva. We are trying to nab the others.”

At a time when citizens across the country are queuing up at banks for cash, the incident begs the question how Bisht came by so much cash in new currency.
