Dwarka: Notice issued to Flipkart, Amazon following acid attack in Mohan Garden

Dwarka: Two bike-borne youths threw acid on the face of a minor girl in Mohan Garden area of Dwarka in Delhi on Wednesday, December 14, 2022. According to the police, the accused youth had ordered acid from online shopping website Flipkart, after which he attacked the 17 year old girl, who was reportedly his ex-girlfriend. On Thursday, a day after the incident, the Delhi Police has issued a notice to Flipkart regarding the sale of acid in this case.

It may be noted that the sale of acid in the open in the market is prohibited as per the order of the Supreme Court, but the accused, identified as Sachin Arora, had bought it online from an e-commerce platform. The 17-year-old girl was attacked with acid on Wednesday morning near Dwarka Mor when she was on her way to school. Police has arrested three people in this case.

Police said that Sachin Arora, along with two other accomplices, Harshit Agarwal and Virender Singh alias Sonu had conspired to throw acid on the girl a few days back. All the three accused are residents of the same locality where the girl lives. According to the police, Harshit was driving the bike at the time of the incident.

The girl student injured in this acid attack is still admitted in the ICU of Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. There is anger among the people of Delhi due to the acid attack on the minor girl. People are raising questions as to how acid is being sold openly despite the ban on its sale.

E-commerce company Flipkart said on Thursday that it condemns the acid attack incident on the girl on Wednesday and has blacklisted acid sellers on its platform. The company claimed that they are fully cooperating with the investigating agencies. The Delhi Commission for Women has also issued notices to two e-commerce companies regarding permission to sell acid on their respective platforms

Flipkart said in a statement that such incidents are deplorable and their thoughts are with the victim and her family. Flipkart Marketplace closely monitors and removes products that violate expected standards. Strict action is taken against vendors found involved in selling illegal, unsafe and banned products, the statement said.

Regarding this matter, the DCW said that it has come to know that acid is being sold indiscriminately on online shopping websites like Amazon and Flipkart, which is an illegal act. The commission said the easy availability of acid on online platforms is a matter of serious concern and should be investigated immediately.
