Hard Cash Day 40: Sorry kids, no pocket money!

Demonetisation has spared no one — not even the children, as hapless parents slash pocket money to deal with daily expenses.

Hard Cash Day 40: Sorry kids, no pocket money!

Amid all the talk of demonetisation, currency ban, the perils of a cashless situation, have you wondered how the surprise government move has impacted children? Probably not. But as City Spidey finds out, they, too, have been left in the lurch.

The latest addition to the list of disgruntled citizens are the children who have had to agree to a significant dip in pocket money. For some, there has been no pocket money in the past two months!

Here's what parents and children have to say.

Says Sneha Srivastav, a resident of Amrapali Princely Estate in Sector 76, Noida, "I have two sons, and I would give Rs 3,000 every month to my elder son and Rs 1,000 to my younger one. But I stopped giving them pocket money after the currency ban."

Sunil, her elder son, says, "After a lot of discussion and persuasion, my parents agreed to not stop my pocket money. They tried to slash it, but I managed to prevail. I am a college student and have certain day-to-day expenses, including transport. I wouldn't have been able to manage with a slash."

Rajesh Singh, a resident of Sector 24, stopped giving pocket money to his daughter from this month. He says, "My daughter is quite mature, and she tends to save. She has savings from the last month. In fact, she is the one who asked me to not give her any pocket money for the time being."

Sometimes, daughters need to take charge. And Manika, his daughter, did. She dug into her savings and loaned him Rs 200 for petrol. "I have saved about Rs 2,000, and I knew he desperately needed the cash. So I gave him what he needed," says Manika with a smile.
