Magenta Line trial runs begin

Trial runs for Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's Magenta Line have begun today, December 21. The 36.98-km route consists of 25 Metro stations from Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden. The Magenta Line will provide direct connectivity to Terminal 1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport (see table below).

According to DMRC, trials are in progress on both the ends of the Magenta corridor. Trials between the 13-km stretch between Botanical Garden and Kalkaji Mandir had started on October 27. Right now, trial runs are being carried out on about 23 km of the route.

DMRC said that trials in the underground section between IGI Airport Terminal 1 and Kalkaji Mandir will be carried out in the coming months, after track-laying has been completed. A six-coach train was lowered on the tracks near the Sadar Bazar Cantonment station using cranes and trailers recently to expedite the process of commencing trials on the section between Janakpuri West and Terminal 1.

Delhi Metro’s new Unattended Train Operations-enabled engines will operate on this corridor. As the name suggests, UTO-enabled trains have been designed to operate without drivers. In the initial phase, operators will run the train and gradually move towards driverless operations. The new trains with high levels of automation will now undergo rigorous trials to ensure their readiness for smooth operations after the commissioning of the corridor. Later, in stages, the new signalling technology — Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) — will also undergo testing.

The response of the train at different speeds, braking modes and the interconnection with the Operations Control Centre (OCC) will also be monitored during the trials. The behaviour of the track system and the Over Head Electrification (OHE) will also be checked regularly.
