Don't even think of driving under the influence of alcohol this New Year. At least not in Gurgaon.
Police is planning to deploy 500 jawans, including Rapid Action Force personnel, police commandos and lady police officers, in different parts of the city. Barricades will be set up at all major roads.
Joint teams of excise department and police will be on vigil to avert any untoward incidents. They will keep an eye on the city's many bars and pubs. The employees and those entering the bar will be under CCTV surveillance.
On December 31, no movement of vehicles will be allowed on MG Road during the evening. All entries to MG Road from Iffco Chowk metro station, Iffco Chowk, Bristol Hotel, Sikandarpur metro station will be closed. Parking will be available at Leisure Valley Park.
Speaking on the security arrangements, Gurgaon police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar said, "Our prime focus is MG Road, as most of the crowd will go there to celebrate. A large number of police personnel will be deployed there to keep things under control. We are chalking out an action plan for other parts of the city as well."
Residents have shown mixed response to the security arrangements.
Rajesh Kumar , a resident of Sector 47, is pleased and said, “They seem to have looked into every aspect, and I am pretty happy. Many drive under the influence of alcohol on that day, and that must be stopped at any cost."
Stuti Arora of Sushant Lok is, however, sceptical. She said, “Every year, police claims great security, but the ground reality is far from it. Men roam around freely completely inebriated. And the police simply fails to check eve-teasing."
