Kirti Apartments, a co-operative group housing cociety in Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension, has come up with a unique environment-friendly way to bid adieu to 2016 and usher in the New Year. Residents of the 178 flats in the society have decided to segregate kitchen waste before giving it away to the waste collector from January 1.

Alka Gulati, a resident, said, “We want to set an example for the rest of the neighbourhood. The idea for this initiative came from Shyama Arora, one of our residents.”

“A couple of months ago, Shyama wrote a letter to the managing committee of the society and urged all residents to take up waste segregation. She is not here right now, as she lives in the US with her daughter most of the time, but whenever she comes here, she shares some very interesting ideas with the committee members and residents,” she added.

When City Spidey spoke to SK Tuteja, secretary of the society, he said, “The managing committee welcomes any initiative that helps make our society better. When this idea was brought before us, we thought it would be great to implement it from January 1. The managing committee then sent messages to all residents and appealed to them to segregate waste in different polythene bags before handing it over to the society’s waste collector.”
