Delhi is a city of rich cultural history and theatre has been a significant part of that history. The city has witnessed golden era in past as far as the performing arts concerned and theatre is one of them. The art got transformed with the time carrying legacy. Theatre groups played key role in giving the art a richness and sustainability with desired evolution in contemporary world. There are several old theatre groups in Delhi that have been performing for decades and have played a crucial role in keeping the art of theatre alive in the city. On the occasion of World Theatre Day City Spidey has brought the  five such old theatre groups of Delhi for its readers to know:

National School of Drama (NSD)

Established in 1959, the National School of Drama is one of the oldest theatre groups in Delhi. It is also a theatre training institute that has produced several prominent theatre practitioners and actors. The group puts up regular performances, showcasing the work of its students and faculty. NSD is known for its experimental and innovative productions that tackle contemporary issues.

Little Theatre Group (LTG)

Established in 1947, the Little Theatre Group is known for its experimental and avant-garde productions that push the boundaries of traditional theatre. The group has also been involved in promoting theatre in schools and colleges, organizing theatre festivals and competitions for students.

Delhi Art Theatre

The Delhi Art Theatre is another old theatre group that has been active in the city for over 50 years. Founded in 1964, the group has produced numerous plays in Hindi and English, focusing on contemporary issues and themes. The group has also been involved in theatre education and has conducted workshops and training programs for aspiring theatre artists.

Asmita Theatre Group

Though relatively new yet  Asmita Theatre Group has made a significant impact on Delhi's theatre world since its establishment in 1993. The group has been known for its socially relevant plays, highlighting issues such as gender, caste, and communalism.
