5 RWA proposals for a smoother car-free day in Ghaziabad

The RWA Federation of Ghaziabad, in a meeting with the district administration yesterday, put forward five support requests to make its second car-free day (CFD) on March 10, a success. To be observed only in Kavi Nagar this time, here’s a quick look at the points:

1. Additional buses on the road: The UP Transport Department has been asked to provide 20 extra buses on the day. These will run from a number of fixed locations to ensure connectivity with Metro stations, bus stands and railway stations.

2. Pollution-reading before and on CFD: The Pollution Control Board has been asked to conduct air-quality readings in at least 10 locations before and on the CFD to compare results. The board was also requested to write to Ghaziabad industries to donate 2 per cent of their profits for the development of Ghaziabad’s infrastructure as part of their CSR activities. These includs installation of CCTV cameras, maintenance of street dividers and zebra crossings, and construction of cemented stops.

3. Fixed route for autos: The district transport officer has been asked to make driver manuals mandatory for autos and to give them a fixed route to ply on.

4. Police support: SP (Traffic) has been requested to extend his department’s support to the initiative. Like the last CFD, constables are requested to use cycles as their mode of transport on the day.

5. Solidarity from government and official bodies: Government offices, civil defence and market associations have been asked to show their support to CFD by avoiding cars on the day.

City Spidey hopes this time the initiative moves beyond being largely a symbolic affair.
