New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) Chairman  Amit Yadav conferred“Swachh Prerak Award” to the Market Traders Associations (MTAs), Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), Schools, Hotels, Religious Institutions and Inspectorate staff of the NDMC area in presence of Vice Chairman, NDMC  Satish Upadhyay, Secretary- NDMC Dr Ankita Chakravarty and other senior officers of NDMC at Palika Kendra, New Delhi today.

While addressing the gathering, Chairman-NDMC, Yadav said that these Swachh Prerak Awards are being given for outstanding efforts to eliminate single use plastic and commitment towards Swachh Bharat Mission in New Delhi area. This felicitation event shall act as an encouragement for others to join hands. Self-motivation is the only way towards sustainability of movement and requires recognition for efforts in swachhta activities.

Yadav emphasised on the adoption of ban on single use plastic as a mass movement country wide and also in NDMC which had seen citizens coming forward on their own to be a part of this movement. Citizen’s participation plays a crucial role in achieving any goal for the betterment of environment. In just a matter of time a movement started by a single person leads to a group involvement motivating various others to join the same. He further said that one such movement has been evidenced in NDMC where Market Trade Associations, Resident Welfare Association, Bulk Waste Generators, Schools, Religious Institutions and Offices, all have come forward to declare themselves “Single use plastic free” and worked towards the success of achieving the tag at their organisational/institutional level, these were felicitated on Saturday 15 April for their contribution in the movement.

Out of 135 total awards, 37 RWAs, 28 MTAs, 22 offices, 18 Schools, 9 hotels, 7 Religious Institutions and 14 Inspectorate staff received the awards. All awardees received appreciation certificate and a recycled cloth bag to spread the message not to use plastic carry bags.

Vice Chairman-NDMC, Shri Satish Upadhyay appreciated the efforts of all stakeholders of New Delhi area like RWAs, MTAs, Schools, Religious Places etc. towards elimination of single use plastic to preserve our earth plane for next generation. The citizens have a big role in the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s initiative of “Swachh Bharat Mission” to make India as a neat, clean, green and healthy nation towards overall development. 

He further said that in view of G20 summit programmes, RWAs, MTAs and other stakeholders have a big responsibility to showcase the image of capital of India. He stressed upon the fundamental duties above the fundamental rights to make NDMC get the first rank in Swachh Survekshan .  

On the occasion Chairman- NDMC administrated the “Plastic Pledge” for not using single use plastic while Vice Chairman-NDMC administrated the Swachhta Pledge to all awardees and officers who were present in the programme.

Shri Upadhyay also informed that Nineteen banned single use plastic products with effect from 1 July 2022 are Ear buds with plastic sticks, Plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice cream sticks, polystyrene (thermocol) for decoration, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straws, stirrers, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes , invitation cards, cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 120microns, plastic bags less than 120 microns.
