SDMC’s clean campaign evokes RWA scoff

The corporation began a cleanliness drive on December 1, 2016, urging community cooperation, but many RWAs say they had no idea about any such drive.

Following orders of the Delhi High Court, SDMC has taken up cleaning drives across the sub-city until January 10. Trucks, with campaign banners, can now be seen at various locations.

The corporation had also issued a circular in this regard on December 16, with an appeal to RWAs and residents to cooperate in the drive. They were asked to pitch in by ensuring waste segregation at society level, disposal of horticulture waste in dhalaos (waste receptacles)avoiding leaving pooja waste, including idols, under the trees, and refraining from dumping construction material along roads.

However, RWAs and residents claim that the corporation didn’t do enough to spread the word, as only a few RWAs were aware of the drive.

Rakesh Godara, RWA president of Om Apartments, Sector 14, says, "As far as waste management in our sector is concerned, the drive is a complete failure! You can still see garbage dumped on the road and around the corner of the park. We were not even aware of such a campaign. The corporation should have contacted the RWAs of the area."

Surprisingly, corporation officials claim they had sent out circulars to RWAs across sectors and societies. RWA representatives, however, deny the claim.

President of Ganpati Apartments, Sector 9, and president of Federation of RWAs (FORWA), Advocate KS Bhati, says, "I have seen the trucks in the area, but the drive has not made a big difference, really. They want the community to cooperate but haven’t approached the RWAs! Without collective effort, things will remain the same.”

Joint secretary of Dwarka Forum, Sushil Kumar, feels the corporation is carrying out the drive under pressure from the High Court. "It’s just a paper formality," he says. "The corporation wants to improve its image, but it will not succeed unless it approaches the RWAs.”
