At a time when the need to care for the environment can’t be stressed enough, a group of senior citizens in Sector 10, Dwarka, is walking the talk.

These residents have been taking care of a neighbourhood park in the sector located between Panchsheel Apartments and Bandhu Vihar Apartments by planting trees and managing horticultural waste. They have planted about 65 saplings and have even made a pit to make compost.

The group consist of only four residents — SS Goel and Madan Lal Ahuja from IIT Engineers Society; Madan Lal Gupta from Bandhu Vihar Apartments; and Mithilesh Kumar from Chandanwari Apartments.

Goel says, “We come here regularly for morning walks and yoga. One day we decided to do something for the park. We began by planting saplings of different varieties. As there was no water supply in the park, we carried water from our homes for the plants. We have been doing this for over six months now.”

These residents now want to plant trees that will bear fruits, such as mango, pomegranate and guava. Kumar shares, “Our children do not even know what these plants look like. We want them to grow up as close to nature as possible."

The group has also been managing horticultural waste by putting it into a pit. “When we saw a huge heap of horticultural waste, we decided to use it for composting. All the waste has been put in the pit and covered with soil. After some time, it will turn into manure that we can use in the park. It’s a small effort, but we want to do what we can. I’ve also told corporation officials about it at a recent meeting held in Sector 23,” adds Goel.
