A group of residents have begun an initiative to safeguard the rights of ragpickers, most of whom are children, in Dwarka.

Inder Mohan Khanna, a resident of New Jai Bharat Apartments (Sector 4, Dwarka), along with three other persons filed a petition recently at the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

He filed the petition as president of the children’s cell of ‘Helping Human,’ an NGO. Anil Parashar, a resident of Sri Agrasen Apartments (Sector 7, Dwarka), Abha Gurain, resident of Kailash Apartments (Sector 4, Dwarka) and Bhaskar Agrawal, a resident of Indirapuram, accompanied Khanna to the NCPCR office in Connaught Place.

IM Khanna told City Spidey, "We have filed the petition through Helping Human NGO on January 10, 2017. Rupa Kapoor, a member of NCPCR, has assured us of prompt action."

"We are trying to curb the abuse of rights of children involved in ragpicking. I have located various places in the area, such as in sectors 7, 6, 8, 9, 14, 16, 3, 4 and 5, where children can be seen around garbage dumping spots. This is a sorry state of affairs for authorities as well as residents. We should think about these children who are not only missing out on school, but are also living in unhygienic conditions. The way they go about rag picking is hazardous too. There is a need to do something in this direction. And that is why we have taken this initiative," said Anil Parashar.
