Residents of Purvanchal Royal Park, a residential society in Sector 137, Noida, turned up in large numbers to celebrate Lohri, a traditional festival that originated in Punjab, at an open space near the entry gate of the society on the evening of January 13.

The celebration began with the making of a pyramid sort of structure from wood sticks at the spot. Women in traditional attires encircled the pyramid and danced to the tune of traditional Lohri songs and music.

They also played a dhol and performed the traditional bhangra dance. The Lohri bonfire was lit as folk songs were being sung by residents. Women holding plates of revri (a kind of sweet), peanuts and popcorn went around the holy fire to bid farewell to winter and welcome the spring season.

Sandeep Ohari, a resident, said, “It is the need of the hour to preserve our rich cultural heritage and make the young generation aware of it. Celebrating cultural festivals gives us a chance to do that.”

“The festival provides an opportunity to interact with friends and family, and that leads to communal harmony and peace in the society,” said Vikash Sharma, another resident.

Meanwhile, the children of the society had a gala time as they danced around the bonfire and offered prayers. They also came up with two rounds of traditional folk dance.
