Can NHAI complete NH 24 widening work by Dec 2018?

“Going by the progress we have seen over the past year, we don't have much hopes with NHAI's assurances of completing the works by December 2018,” said a resident living near NH 24.

Can NHAI complete NH 24 widening work by Dec 2018?

In response to a recent complaint filed by Alok Kumar, patron of FedAOA, about the slow progress of NH 24 widening work, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said work would be completed by December 2018. Kumar told City Spidey that the authorities had maintained their initial promise of completing the project within 910 days from commencement.

Residents living along NH 24 in Ghaziabad, however, have slim hopes of NHAI walking the talk.

Currently, residents of Indirapuram and Crossings Republik spend hours on the highway due to severe traffic congestion. Commuters face extreme traffic snarls, especially on intersections such as Sector 62 Noida, Kala Patthar, Khoda and Crossings Republik. Widening of the highway is set to put an end to the traffic mess.

NHAI's road-widening project is being undertaken in three sections — from Nizamuddin Bridge in Delhi to UP Gate, from UP Gate to Dasna, and from Dasna to Hapur. The highway starts widening at NH 44 near Nizamuddin Bridge, intersects NH 34 at Lal Kuan, and goes on to join NH 9 in Hapur. According to the response, the contracts have already been awarded for Nizamuddin Bridge in Delhi to UP Gate and Dasna to Hapur. While, bids for the work on the stretch from UP Gate to Dasna are under evaluation, NHAI maintains that efforts were being made to complete the entire project between Delhi to Hapur by December 2018.

Speaking to City Spidey, Kapil Singhal, a resident of Niho Scottish Gardens, an Indirapuram society located a few hundred metres away from the National Highway, said the project had been inaugurated more than a year ago but hardly five per cent of the work had been completed since then.

“We don’t understand how they intend to stick to their promise, with over a third of the promised time limit already over,” Singhal added.

Sanjay Jha, a resident of Crossings Republik, a township on NH 24, had similar views. Jha said it was tragic that a major development work concerning the welfare of lakhs of residents has been stalled for so long. “Going by the progress we have seen over the past year, we don't have much hopes with NHAI's assurances of completing the works by December 2018,” added Jha.
