I'puram: Fire breaks out in Exotica Elegance flat

A fire broke out in a second-floor flat in Exotica Elegance, a residential society in Ahinsa Khand 2, Indirapuram. The incident took place in Flat No E-204 around 9 am on January 19.

A video recorded by a bystander reveals that the flames quickly spread to the balconies of the upper and lower floors.

Sweta Rai, AOA president of the society, said to City Spidey, “The flat was occupied by Sameer Agarwal, a tenant living with his wife and parents. Thankfully, no one was injured in the incident.”

An estimated loss of over Rs 60,000 is feared. Gold ornaments, clothes, important documents and a wooden wardrobe, along with the AC vent — were damaged during the incident. Thankfully, the flames were doused by the society’s maintenance staff and security guards using the existing fire-fighting system.

The fire started after a balcony curtain caught fire in the oil lamp lit for prayers in the family’s temple in the balcony. It was lit by Agarwal’s mother.

"It was windy in the morning, so the curtain must have blown into the lamp’s flame," said a society resident.

“The fire gradually spread to stacks of old newspapers kept in the balcony. The flames then spread to the adjoining living room, breaking the glass panes of the door, and also burnt a major portion of the living room ceiling,” recounted Rai.

"After spotting the fire, Rohit Chaudhary, the guard posted in the block, informed others and ran out to help. We used fire extinguishers to douse the flames and the situation was under control within 15 minutes,” said Lokesh Chaudhary, security supervisor of Exotica Elegance.

Agarwal's bedridden father had to be carried out of the flat by security guards.

According to residents, a fire tender reached the spot almost 15 minutes after the flames were doused.

“We had received the fire alert, but morning traffic congestion on roads caused the delay. The fire was successfully doused before the fire engine even reached the society,” explained AR Sharma, chief fire officer of Ghaziabad.

A resident of the society, KK Singh, said the AOA had recently invested more than Rs 10 lakh in replacing the society's old firefighting equipment.
