A man in his mid-20s approached the pet owner, pushed him down, snatched the dog from him and made a run for it in broad daylight.

Incidents of people being robbed at gunpoint or jewellery snatched by bikers may have become routine affairs for Gurgaon residents, but nothing had prepared them for an incident in which a dog was abducted from right outside a society gate.

The incident was reported from Vatika City on Sohna Road. Retired wing commander BR Mehta, 80, had just walked out of his society gate on the afternoon of January 17 with his pet Labrador retriever, Hobbes. Suddenly, a youth walked up to Mehta and started insisting on walking Hobbes. When Mehta refused, the youth pushed him, grabbed the leash and ran away with his pet. Hobbes had been part of the Mehta family for nine years. The family has put up posters of their missing pet in the nearby areas and has announced a reward for anyone who can help find Hobbes.

Mehta's daughter-in-law, Supriya, has lodged a complaint at Sadar police station. SHO Sadar Vijay Yadav told City Spidey that an FIR had been registered against the unidentified snatcher and the police were doing their best to find Hobbes.

The FIR describes the snatcher as a young man in his mid-20s. "The youth introduced himself to my father-in-law as a neighbour and claimed he was known to the family. But when my father-in-law refused to hand over the leash to him, the man pushed him down. My father-in-law fell to ground, but was lucky to not be injured. The youth, in the meantime, fled with Hobbes," said Supriya.

Gurgaon Police spokesperson ACP Manish Sehgal is sanguine that the culprit will be nabbed soon.

Residents of the city have reached out to the Mehta family. Pooja Rawat, a resident of Sushant Lok, said, “My heart goes out to them. It’s quite an unusual incident. I hope the police nabs the snatcher very soon."
