Gurgaon: ‘Fee hike’ protest outside Salwan Public School Parents assembled outside the school

About 100 parents assembled outside Salwan Public School in Gurgaon in protest against a hike in the school fees.

They claim that the school is not charging fees according to the Haryana education department and have increased the fee by about Rs 20,000 per year. Parents told City Spidey that they have reported the matter to Neelam Bhandari, the district education officer.

Sonia Vashisht, a resident of Sector 15 Part 1, said, “My two children are enrolled in this school. My son is in Standard 2 and daughter is in Standard 4. Earlier, the quarterly fee of the kids was Rs 21,000 each. But the management is charging Rs 27,000 now, which I have paid to the school. They have raised the fee to pay the staff according to the seventh pay commission and this is a curse to us parents. The school authorities should at least think about us once before raising the fee.”

Mona Narang, a resident of Shivaji Nagar, Sector 11, said, “My Son is studying in Standard 8 in the school. I have paid according to the inflated fees in this quarter. Government should do something about it. They raise the fees whenever they want. Our country, it seems, has the worst education system. Government schools do not have proper infrastructure and the private ones loot you like robbers. Once your kid enrolls in such a school, you are trapped!”

However, Sandhya Awasthi, the principal of the school, dismissed the parents’ allegations. “We have not increased fees for this session. We will raise the fee from new session wef April. We will consider the parents’ difficulties before taking such a decision. They will not face any type of harassment," said Awasthi.

Based on the calculation (done by parents) in the picture above, parents claim that the hike in fee from Rs 21,000 to Rs 27,000 is to pay the school staff according to the seventh pay commission
