Residents from various sectors of Dwarka attended a Dwarka Collective session held in Sector 6 on violence against women and the legal recourse on February 5.

The resource person at the event was Dr Sunila Singh. She focused on the types of violence against women that are there in the society. She also discussed the patriarchal structure of the society and shed light on the various laws regarding violence against women.

Residents interacted with Singh in a question and answer session. They asked questions related to child marriage and the dowry act too.

Leena Dabiru, an activist and a member of Dwarka Collective, gave the vote of thanks at the end of the session. She also informed residents that many social organisations have joined hands over the issue of women’s rights and are going to organise the global event One Billion Rising on February 12 in Dwarka.

According to www.onebillionrising.org, One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. The campaign, launched on Valentine’s Day in 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime.
