Vacant Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) plots in Sector 57, Gurgaon, are fast turning into garbage-dumping yards. HUDA's maintenance staff also burns waste here, but there is no action from the authorities.
Residents said the garbage reeks to the high heavens and attracts mosquitoes. Garbage collectors from adjacent sectors have also started dumping trash in these vacant plots, making life miserable for residents living in the vicinity.
“Despite numerous complaints, dumping of garbage continues to be a problem," said RK Singhal, a resident of Sector 57. "I have stopped going for morning walks altogether. It is impossible to enjoy the fresh morning breeze with the stench of garbage in the air."
Colonel (Retired) NC Nath of Sector 57 is appalled at the lack of civic sense displayed by both residents and the authorities. He pointed out that a vacant piece of land near his house had turned into one of these garbage dumps, and growing bigger every day, thanks to a few residents.
“Even employees associated with garbage-collection vehicles promote this practice, saying they will collect the garbage once it accumulates,” said Nath.
A resident said people throw waste in vacant plots, as there are no dustbins in their areas. RL Bagri, another resident of Sushant Lok II, said, “I have taken many steps for the betterment of my ward, but people hardly cooperate. They are not concerned about the hygiene of the area.”
Joginder Singh, former president of Sushant Lok II RWA, said, “Since the plots belong to HUDA, there is no private agency employed to look after it. The problem persists, even after complaining to the authorities and the area councillor.”
Yashpal Yadav, HUDA administrator, said, “Yes, the matter has come to our notice. We are looking into it and will get such areas cleaned. The concerned officials have been directed to start clearing such plots.”
