Suncity, Gurgaon: Residents oppose MCG tax collection

The RWA of the Suncity township, Sector 54, organised a tax-collection camp for the MCG at its community centre on February 19. However, residents protested against the tax, since the corporation had failed to provide them with even basic amenities, such as roads and water.

However, 250 residents did pay taxes, and the MCG had officials at the venue to help out.

Several RWAs have opposed the property tax. A few residents have even written to the MCG commissioner on the matter. The Gurgaon Citizens Council (GCC) has filed a petition in High Court, asking the MCG to first provide basic facilities and then demand tax.

GCC president RS Rathee said, “Most residents refused to pay — they have only paid for 2017 and denied paying for the previous years. The amount paid by the residents will be refunded if we win the case pending in High Court.”

Vishwa Mohan Kumar Singh, general secretary of the township, said, “We organised the camp to ensure that we are not declared defaulters, and we don’t need to bear any penalty. Of the 1,300 apartments, 800 are occupied. About 200 owners had already paid tax. And during the camp, 250 more paid up.”

YS Gupta, joint commissioner of MCG, said the funds from the tax collection will go into providing better utilities. He added, “We want people to pay tax, and that’s why we have offered a 25 per cent rebate. The scheme is valid till February 28. However, strict action will be taken against those who fail to pay up. We will seal and attach movable and immovable properties of defaulters. A notice has been issued to all the property owners on the matter.”
