DDA markets of Mayur Vihar Phase I and Vasundhara Enclave may soon be expanded and made encroachment-free. Some residents living in the area told City Spidey that couple of days back, a team of DDA officials led by VK Chauhan, chief engineer (East Zone), took a round of the markets in the area.

"DDA has plans to extend all the markets in the area," said Chauhan. "Once our inspection is over, we will submit a report to the planning department to take things forward."

It was also learnt that after getting rid of the encroachments, the free area would be used to expand the existing market. Some unused portions of land near the market will also be used for the expansion.

The DDA markets were developed keeping the needs of residents in mind. Soon, however, the markets were overrun with encroachments, giving them a rather shabby appearance.

"We had no prior information about the DDA officials' visit," said PK Vasudev, president of Mayur Vihar Phase I managing committee. "When we talked to them, we realised that they had come for a recce of the markets and were planning to extend the markets."
