Mega evacuation drill in 101 schools in April

More than 100 schools from across Gautam Budh Nagar district agreed to hold a mega evacuation drill on April 27 to help students imbibe tactics to escape safely in the event of a natural calamity.

The drill will be held simultaneously in all schools. As the district falls under seismic zone 4, there is a high risk of damage to life and property in the event of an earthquake.

The decision to hold the drill came at a joint meeting of the district administration, disaster management cell and the principals of the respective schools. The meeting was held at Indira Gandhi Kala Kendra, Sector 6, Noida, on March 14.

NP Singh, district magistrate, KM Singh, former member of Natural Disaster Management Authority, Keshav Kumar, additional district magistrate, and Dr Kumar Raka, a planning specialist and head of Noida disaster management cell, were present on the dais during the meeting.

Dr Raka said, “The mega evacuation drill for 101 schools from the twin cities of Noida and Greater Noida is going to be one of biggest events in the country. There won’t be any difficulties as far as management of resources for holding the event at the same time is concerned.”

He added that he has roped in trainers from across the globe and that the disaster management cell has prepared a few hundred volunteers for the event in the past six months in the city.

Only students of Std VI and above will participate in the exercise. Dr Raka said, “As the weather has started getting warmer with every passing day, little children won’t be able to bear the heat wave in April.”

The Noida Disaster Management Cell has begun planning for the event and has invited schools to appoint a permanent volunteer, whom the cell will prepare as part of a disaster relief force. The schools have also been advised to conduct several rounds of evacuation drills in their premises before they go for the final drill in April.

NP Singh said, “Schoolchildren need to be prepared for any eventuality as the place where we are residing is prone to earthquakes. An earthquake of Richter 6.5 scale or above can’t be ruled out.”
