Rather than brooding about her autism, 24-year-old specially abled artist Amrit Khurana used it as a springboard for her creativity.

Eyes are the windows to the soul, and how one sees things a translation of the beauty that lies within. No wonder, then, that 24-year-old Amrit Khurana's artworks are so unique and full of joie de vivre.

A resident of Sector 44, Noida, this specially abled artist draws on her unique vision of the world to create paintings, sketches and ceramics that resonate with her mental tenacity and energetic creativity. Her autism, rather than becoming a debilitating factor, provided her with a unique insight into the world around her, making her a shining example of how to play the hand you are dealt in life.

Though Inner Dimensions — a one-of-a-kind exhibition of her artworks at the Art Life Gallery in Sector 44, Noida — is not her first, this indeed is the first time so many of her works are being displayed in one space. Before this, she has had three solo shows and participated in six group shows, one overseas.

The artist's creative imagination stems from scenes from her daily life — her outings with parents, something she saw on TV or books she came across. "She is a good observer and has the ability to capture the myriad expressions of the world and the society around her," says her mother Aarti Khurana.

Pratibha Agarwal, co-promoter and director of the Art Life Gallery, has nothing but praise for this young artist. “The varying colours and different forms that are depicted show Amrit’s mental tenacity. Usually individuals on the autism spectrum often become fixated on their favourite things, but the variety of subjects that Amrit tackles in her art all underline the fact that the artist is mentally as smart as one gets,” she says.

“Her art is incomparable, a window to her life. From mundane to magnificent is how I would describe her life and her artworks,” stresses Agarwal, also the curator of the show.

Khurana’s latest works are a testimony to how "the face is the mirror of the mind, and eyes, without speaking, confess the secrets of the heart". Drawing inspiration from the myriad people and situations around her, she pours the bliss she feels into her artworks, building compositions that touch the soul. Her art, as a result, is a beautiful harmony of colour, rhythm of lines and forms.

Khurana's ceramics, another medium she uses to express her distinct style, have received praise from art enthusiasts, even forming part of private collections, for their strength of expression and the use of warm earth tones.

If one looks carefully, one can see visual replicas of the characters in her paintings transferred on to her ceramic tiles and vases, underlining the innocence of her soul.

One need only step into her world to see.

Will you? Inner Dimensions is on at Art Life Gallery until April 9.
