Narrow escape for Dwarka Kunj Apts resident

RS Rai, a resident of Flat No 3, Dwarka Kunj Apartments, Sector 12, Pocket 5, Dwarka, on the evening of March 26, had a close shave when a large chunk of grit wash (better known as exposed aggregate plaster) fell off from the flat above his.

Rai, who is a member of the society's RWA, was out on his balcony when a heavy chunk fell off the underside of Flat No 7, above his own. On its way down, it fell on the dish antenna installed on Rai's balcony and went crashing to the ground, breaking into pieces.

"There are cracks on the grit wash across the society, especially on the window sunshades and the parapet walls," said Rai. "There are many spots where you can see the grit wash finish hanging precariously. More than 80 per cent of the sunshades are damaged. DDA needs to repair them urgently."

The incident has caused residents to wonder why Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has not taken the issue seriously.

According to the RWA, the common areas are in a deplorable condition, with most walls discoloured from seepage. The RWA has written to DDA a number of times but nothing has been done about the problem.

"My flat has both the problems," said Prabhakar Gautam, a member of the RWA who stays in Flat No 11. "There are several locations where the grit wash is about to fall off; and the seepage has been a problem for ages. Most flats in my block face these two problems. We repaired some of the damages on our own. But that's DDA's job. They are the ones who constructed these flats using sub-standard material. And this problem can be seen everywhere in this pocket. It is a serious problem and DDA needs to take action immediately."
