No silver lining for Noida meat shops yet

The ban has left several butchers and their families jobless, even as small restaurants that specialised in non-vegetarian fare now serve dal.

No silver lining for Noida meat shops yet

Over a week after the ban on illegal shops and slaughterhouses in the state, butchers in Noida are facing a tough time making ends meet. Speaking to City Spidey, several meat traders from the Harola Murga Mandi said 1,000 such businessmen from all over Noida were left unemployed and without work as a result of the ban.

Sunny Qureshi, owner of an abattoir in Sector 8, told City Spidey that the meat trade was typically a family business, with most families following the trade over several generations. "Our entire family is in the same occupation," said Qureshi. "This ban has left all of us unemployed. This is what about 150 of the shop owners and their families in Sector 8 are going through."

Small restaurants which earlier used to serve buffalo meat have now started serving vegetarian items to maintain their livelihood.

Navratri has come as a welcome relief to several Noida residents.

Rajesh Kumar, a resident of sector 44, told City Spidey that he was having to scour for chicken shops to fulfil his children's demands. "If not for Navratri, we would have died trying to placate my younger daughter's tantrums. She raises hell if she doesn't get her share of the chicken every day," added Kumar.

Swati Choudhury, a resident of Sector 62, said her husband Ritam was a choosy eater and liked to buy his own fish. "He makes regular trips to the Ghazipur Mandi to get his choice of fish and meat. The ban has left him disheartened," said Choudhury.

Meat traders from all over Noida have planned to approach the District Magistrate with the problem. "We are going to gather at the DM's office tomorrow in large numbers," said a butcher.
