Gurgaon: DLF Foundation opens training centre for security guards

DLF Foundation’s Skill A Million programme has partnered with OSSIM, a renowned security training institute, to open a state-of-the-art training centre for security personnel in Chakkarpur, Gurgaon.

Nearly 4,000 security guards will undergo free training over a two-year period. This training will enable them to perform their duties much more efficiently. This course is designed to meet the increased need for technology in managing security. Apart from this, training in CCTV, emergency-response system, fire safety and electronic security will also be given. The faculty will include well-qualified trainers from premier institutes, the private security industry, the military and the police.

“The aim of the DLF Security Training Programme is to empower and train the ever-growing unorganised security sector," said Gayatri Paul, director, programmes for DLF Foundation, a non-profit organisation. "They will go through a well-developed curriculum covering all aspects of security, such as electronic surveillance, emergency response and disaster relief. At the same time, we will be shaping their personalities. This army of trained security personnel will act as a ready pool of trained manpower that can be tapped by the entire security industry based on requirement.”

Gurgaon, the hub of big corporate houses and MNCs, has a bad reputation when it comes to safety and security. Even though it has a much higher number of security personnel compared to other parts of the NCR, the city can hardly be called safe. It has a host of security issues and the crime rate does not seem to be plummeting.

"The security scenario in the country is such that the police is not sufficient to handle threats," said Paul. "Security guards act as the eyes and ears of the police, but security service providers rarely train their guards. This leads to inefficient services by the guards, who need to interact with people. They should also have the acumen to tell good from bad. Just within a month's training with us, they will be diligent enough to both perform their duties with ease and be assets to the police department.”

In a survey, DLF Foundation found that the lack of trained security guards was a major problem. Paul added, "It is easy for a stranger to get access to any apartment building in the city. In several cases, the thieves managed to get into the society by fooling the guards, and escaped with valuables in broad daylight."

The police strength in Gurgaon is merely 4,200, whereas the number of private security guards in Gurgaon is nearly 3.5 lakh at present. However, the security of thousands of people living in multistorey buildings rests in the hands of untrained guards, who do not know how to handle an emergency. As per police records, there are about 266 private security agencies registered in the city. Surprisingly, there are more than 500 security companies that are unregistered and supplying security guards without any verification.
