Why residents disapprove of this roundabout in Dwarka

The construction of a roundabout at the crossing of sectors 10 and 11 in Dwarka has raised several eyebrows, and residents complain that it has made the area congested and is causing traffic chaos during peak hours.

SK Goel, general secretary of Dwarka Forum and also a member of managing committee of Shivam Apartments, Sector 12, says, “Grills have been placed on all sides of the footpath and is hampering pedestrian movement in the area. The existing zebra crossing has also been blocked.”

The roundabout is being constructed by the DDA and, according to sources, it would be completed in April.

Goel says, “I have written to the DDA and also filed an RTI to know the contact details of the officer who has approved the design. I have also asked who should be held responsible for flouting UTTIPEC [Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure] norms.”

Goel, who has been working on issues related to road safety and pedestrian rights in Delhi, accuses civic bodies of not being serious about such issues and says that such infrastructural designs often cause problems to residents.

He adds, "The space where the roundabout is being constructed used to be wide. The structure could have been a bit smaller to allow for smoother traffic movement."

The presence of a tree and a pole on the middle of the road has made commuting all the more difficult in the area.

Sunil Sareen, joint secretary of Dwarka Forum and a resident of Bharat Vandana Apartments, Sector 19, says, "The structure should either be modified or measures should be taken by the traffic and civic agencies so that the commuters do not face difficulties."
