Gurgaon: Excise department to crack down on liquor sale

It's bad news for party lovers, as there will be no sale of liquor in several Cyber Hub watering holes starting midnight of March 31. The Haryana excise department, as per the Supreme Court directive, will be cracking down on sale of liquor in pubs, bars and restaurants within 500 m of national and state highways.

The department has formed several teams and has borrowed additional officials from the sales tax department for taking stock of the liquor present in restaurants. The excise department has already identified these establishments in Cyber Hub, Sector 29 and Sohna Road.

The licences of these restaurants are also unlikely to be renewed, unless applying from new locations.

Data shows that 143 such pubs, bars and liquor vendors will be affected by the Supreme Court's decision. Aruna Singh, Deputy Excise and Taxation Commissioner (DETC), East, said, “The licences of the pubs and bars that fall within 500 m will not be renewed. We have formed teams for different locations, which are being briefed on how to implement the Supreme Court's order.”

Although the excise department officials in Gurgaon are getting ready for the job ahead, they admitted they were yet to receive directions from the headquarters in Panchkula.
