Parents protest against fee hike by Gurgaon’s Blue Bells Model School

They claim that the authorities are doing nothing to improve the school facilities, so the 15 per cent hike is hard to justify.

Parents of children studying in Gurgaon’s Blue Bells Model School in Sector 4 protested outside the school gates on April 1, demanding a rollback of the fee hike.

Like every year, this time too, the fee had been hiked by 15 per cent, causing parents to agitate. They claimed the authorities were doing nothing to improve the school facilities, so the hike was hardly justifiable.

Director of the school, Suman Gulati, however, said, “The fees had to be hiked due to the increment in teachers’salaries, as mandated by the Seventh Pay Commission. It is not possible for us to roll back this decision. We don’t have enough funds to pay the raised salaries, so we had to take this decision.”

The parents, though, do not seem to be pacified by this explanation.

Raman Jain, a parent, said, “They increase fees every year. There’s no one to check the school’s arbitrary decisions. The government should intervene this time. We are not ATMs — we can’t keep paying whatever they want. They are using our money to construct another branch of the school.”

Brijesh Yadav, another parent, complained, “The management increased the fees without discussing it with us — they are not willing to listen to us. A school is not like any other business. The government should take action against them.”

Arbitrary fee hike by schools has become a persistent cause of worry for parents, and there have been several protests about the issue earlier as well.

Prior to this, parents had protested outside DPS Ghaziabad in Palam Vihar and Salwan Public School in Sector 15, Gurgaon, against their hefty hikes.

On April 2, various parents’ associations of Gurgaon and Faridabad will protest outside the residence of divisional commissioner D Suresh, voicing their woes.
