Thunderstorm on the night of April 4 triggered an eight-hour-long power cut in various parts of Gurgaon.

Residents who were hassled due to the power cut have blamed the authorities for not maintaining the power station and failing to deploy employees at night to restore power.

“I had to leave for the airport. Due to the power cut, I could not charge my mobile phone. I couldn’t contact my driver and was in a complete mess,” says Shveta Sharma, a resident of Palam Vihar.

Power supply was hit in Palam Vihar, sectors 15 to 57, and DLF phases I, II and III. The new developing sectors from 58 to 104 were the worst affected. Supply was restored only after 5.30 am on April 5.

Residents alleged that power outages have become a routine affair in the city and long power cuts also result in water shortages.

Col (Retd) Ram Singh, a resident of Nirvana Country, Sector 50, says, “The electricity department needs to pull up its socks and ensure that maintenance work is done before peak summers otherwise we will have a tough time. They don’t take our calls and rectify problems when needed.”

While some areas in the city had four-hour-long power cuts daily in the past three days, others faced two-hour-long power cuts. When City Spidey spoke to Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) officials, they said that these power cuts were scheduled, but the power cut on April 4 was due to the thunderstorm.
