It's good news for 174 pubs and bars across Gurgaon, including Golf Course road and Sector 29, which are in the safe zone after the Supreme Court order banning sale of alcohol within 500 m of state and national highways.

The Gurgaon excise department on April 5 has submitted its report to the Deputy Commissioner Hardeep Singh. The report has a list of 115 pubs, bars and hotels which are in the danger zone and currently not selling liquor.

Owners of many pubs and bars have approached the department and claimed that they do not fall within 500 m of any highway.

"Those who have doubts about their status can submit their affidavits to us and we will ensure measurements done at the earliest," said HC Dahiya, deputy excise and taxation commissioner (West) Gurgaon. "We have formed teams to measure distance from the highway in presence of the pub or bar owners and if they do not fall within 500 m they can start operations."

The department has not started taking the measurements yet and will take another two days to begin the process, said an excise official.

The city has 289 pubs, bars, restaurants and hotels, including the five-stars and resorts on NH 8.

The east department has marked 50 outlets from Sector 29, Sohna Road and NH 8, and the west has identified 65 establishments in their area, where 34 are from Cyber Hub.

The motorable distance has led to confusion amongst the pub and bar owners, who have started diverting their routes and changing their entry and exit points.

“We will measure the motorable distance as per the approved master plan and not by the recent alterations to escape from the ban,” said Dahiya.

The district administration has formed a committee comprising representatives from the excise department, NHAI, MCG and the police, to ensure implementation of the apex court's order and to look into disputes that may arise.
