The park that was

With withering plants, non-existent benches and walking tracks covered in the sands of time, the Lohia Nagar park in Ghaziabad cries out for attention.

The park that was

The park in Lohia Nagar, Ghaziabad, is in a shambles. But the Municipal Corporation of Ghaziabad seems to be in no mood to revive it. Named after the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, it was once a toast of the locality. But not any more.

The Ghaziabad Development Authority park was inaugurated three decades ago by former UP chief minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari. It served as a recreational area for residents of both Lohia Nagar and Patel Nagar.

The park once boasted a walking track, benches and swings. But all that is now history. Residents have made several representations to local councillor Neetu Tyagi to restore the park to its original glory, but all their pleas fell on deaf ears.

Mukhtiar Singh, a retired principal and a Lohia Nagar resident, rued the fact that in the absence of a caretaker, the park had turned into a garbage dump.

Hari Singh, another resident, said, "Earlier, senior citizens used to visit the park often for their daily walks, but that's not the case any more as the walking track is also broken."

Waterlogging, especially during the monsoon months, is another problem.

The local councillor said a proposal to revive the park would be submitted to the Municipal Corporation of Ghaziabad in the next financial year. Restoration work would be started only after funds were released by the civic body.

City Spidey wonders what the councillor was doing so long.
