The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon fined eight shopkeepers in the Sector 46 market on April 7 as part of a campaign against the use of polythene. The MCG had also roped in the sector’s RWA for the purpose.

Manoj Kumar, sanitation inspector, reached the market with his team and began inspecting the use of polythene in the shops. Two shopkeepers were found with 1.5 kg and 2 kg of polythene and they were fined Rs 10,000 each. Those found with 7 kg and 6 kg of polythene were fined Rs 20,000 each.

In addition, two shopkeepers were fined Rs 500 each after 100 gm of polythene was found with them. Another shopkeeper who had 150 gm of polythene was fined Rs 1,500.

“Such action is taken from time to time by municipal teams against polythene. Citizens should use cloth or jute bags instead of polythene,” said V Umashankar, municipal commissioner.
