Gurgaon: The 200-m stretch that takes forever to cross

The daily market outside the Hong Kong mall on Sushant Lok II main road has long been the root cause of the traffic congestion in the area.

The daily market has a lot of popular eatery joints, which invite many visitors to the area. As a result, the vacant plot adjacent to the mall is full of vehicles parked haphazardly. Numerous people park their vehicles on the roadsides as well, which adds to the confusion. On a typical day, the area is thronging with people and their vehicles on the road, making it a nightmare for those who have to pass through the roughly 200-m stretch, which includes residents living in the area.

The RWA members of nearby areas have lodged several complaints with the District Town and Country Planner (DTP), but no action has been taken on removing the illegal eateries so far.

NS Yadav, RWA president, Sector 57, said, “We have given several written complaints to the administration and police to take action against these stalls and the haphazard parking but in vain."

"It is frustrating to drive through the stretch," said Sunita Gildiyal, a resident of Sushant Lok II. "People enjoying their street food pay absolutely no heed to cars honking at them to make way. They have no qualms parking their cars and eating up valuable road space. On top of that Ola and Uber cabs have chosen this very spot to park their cars and take a nap. This area is also a popular haunt for the local rowdies in the area."

Every now and then, this kind of encroachments crop up leading to problems for the residents as well as the administration. Despite regular anti-encroachment drives across the city, nothing fruitful has happened.

DTP Enforcement has issued letters to the malls for removal of such type of encroachments that obstruct the free movement in the area. Rajender T Sharma, DTP, said, “We had acted sternly against these encroachments earlier and will take strict action against the violators if they are at it again."

Gurgaon Deputy Commissioner Harinder Singh has given direction for an anti-encroachment drive across the city and has asked the enforcement wing to restrain violations and illegal parking on roads across the city.
