East Delhi: Residents who disconnected DJB water supply rethink move

After receiving inflated water bills from Delhi Jal Board prior to 2014, some societies had disconnected the water connection.

The cooperative group housing societies who had earlier disconnected Delhi Jal Board’s water connection are rethinking their decision and want the connection again. The renewed interest is because they want to avail the 700 litres of free water supply that the Delhi government is providing.

Prior to 2014, when some housing societies received inflated water bills from DJB, they had disconnected the water connection. On January 1, 2014, DJB started providing 700 litres of water per day for each household. But those who had disconnected the supply have been missing out on the free service ever since.

However, to avail the facility now, it is mandatory for societies to setup a rainwater harvesting system in their premises.  Praveen Budduluri, general secretary of CEL Apartments, a cooperative group housing society in Vasundhara Enclave, told City Spidey, “Recently, when I approached a DJB official to get a water connection, he asked if my society had installed a rainwater harvesting system. He further told me that a rainwater harvesting system was now a must to avail DJB’s water connection.”

When City Spidey spoke to the public relations officer of DJB, he said that the installation of a rainwater harvesting system had been made mandatory for plots, buildings or societies having an area of 500 sqm or more.
