CyberHub pubs may escape SC ban as officials re-measure distance

There might be reason for G-towners to celebrate, as pubs and bars in DLF Cyber Hub may be exempt from the ban on liquor sale in places 500 m from national and state highways, highly placed sources told City Spidey on April 11.

Officials from the administration started measuring the distance of the high-end bars and pubs from the edge of the highways early Tuesday morning. Sources said after factoring in the newly opened underpass, the distance between the road and the pubs and bars would come to approximately 1,900 m, exceeding the 500 m bar by a huge distance. The underpass was opened by HUDA officials on April 1.

“We are already safe, as our establishment lies beyond the 500-m limit from the highway,” said an elated Manvi Choudhary, director of Peir 38 Bar. “The measurement carried out today shows that we are 2 km away from the highway.”

The recent Supreme Court order had prohibited sale of liquor within 500 m of any national or state highway.

The order came into effect on April 1, as a result of which 43 liquor vendors and 143 pubs — including 34 in Cyber Hub — were stopped from serving alcohol.

The team including officials from district administration, excise department, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Public Works Department (PWD) and police started measuring the distance of the establishments from the highway around 7.30 am on April 11.

The excise and taxation department had received 39 requests from the pub and bars till April 10, for measurement to clear doubts.
