Do you know of Operation Durga in Haryana?

On the lines of the anti-Romeo squad in Uttar Pradesh, the Haryana government on April 12 launched Operation Durga to check harassment of women in public places.

On the very first day, police teams nabbed 72 people from across the state.

The campaign has 24 teams constituted by the chief minister’s flying squad.

Each team has women personnel, including nine sub-inspectors, 14 assistant sub-inspectors, six head constables and 13 constables, besides other police officers from each district.

Though the government has set up women police stations in all districts, women often hesitated in reporting incidents of harassment and sexual assault, particularly when such incidents involved influential anti-social elements.

In Gurgaon, the CID team carried out a "sanitising operation" in colleges and outside schools to prevent anti-social elements from harassing girls. An official said four youths have been arrested by the team and handed over to the police for further action.

The campaign was undertaken after identifying places from where incidents of stalking, harassment and eve teasing were routinely reported.

Though Gurgaon police has conducted such operations earlier too, this is the first time a state-wide operation has been launched.
