Gurgaon: 500 tonnes of untreated waste every day! Solution round the corner

The 32-acre Bandhwari plant along the Gurgaon-Faridabad Expressway, which has been lying defunct for the past four years, could soon become operational. Municipal Corporation Gurgaon (MCG) is now awaiting the allocation of the tender, which is expected to happen soon.

The plant has the capacity to treat 500 tonnes of garbage and has been collecting the same amount every day. This untreated waste and the accumulating toxic water, or leachate, has been polluting the aquifers in the region — and is a constant health hazard. The air, too, is toxic in the area.

Environmentalists have, therefore, been campaigning before the National Green Tribunal (NBT) for the relocation of the plant.

Vivek Khamboj, an environmentalist, said, “We want the process to start before the monsoons set in and the leachate starts polluting the land. We have been in constant touch with the NBT about the issue.”

An MCG official said, “We are working towards making the plant operational as soon as possible, and will make use of manual composting for treatment.”
