National Fire Service Day was observed on the premises of the builder-owned fire station at DLF 5 on Golf Course Road, Gurgaon, on April 14. The day was meant to commemorate fire-fighting professionals who have lost their lives in rescuing others.

DLF 5 will be observing fire safety week from April 14.

On this day in 1944, brave firemen lost their lives during the explosions at Victoria Dock in Mumbai. Sixty-six firemen from Port Fire Service had laid down their lives on that day.

The national theme for this year’s fire safety week is “Firemen — Your Partner for Saving Life and Property”.  As a tribute to the bravery of the firemen in India, a two-minute silence was observed before the start of the proceedings. The event started with a demonstration of the firefighting equipment at the DLF fire station. It showcased the state-of-the-art 90-m Bronto Skylift hydraulic platform used to reach as high up as 30 storeys.

The private fire station was set up at DLF 5 in 2012. DLF has the distinction of being the only private developer in the country to have hydraulic platforms that can reach up to a height of 90 m. For a city such as Gurgaon, which has several highrises, this is a basic requirement for firefighting.

Commenting on the occasion, Aakash Ohri, senior executive director, DLF 5, said, “Fire safety takes utmost priority. We want to ensure that residents are well informed and trained to handle a situation in case of any emergency. During the week, the fire safety team will hold several demonstrations to educate and inform residents on how to prevent fires and take necessary steps in such cases.”

Isham Singh Kashyap, chief fire officer, Haryana Fire Service, commented, “We are glad to be associated with DLF 5 to observe the fire safety week. It is necessary for residents to be informed and educated on fire safety.”

The DLF fire station houses four fire tenders. Each of them has fire dousers with a capacity of 18 kilolitres of water per vehicle, with a maximum water discharge of 3,800 litres per minute. These trucks have features such as a 90-m Bronto Skylift hydraulic platform, with a safe working load of 500 kg.
