If only cars had wings! Half-hour to cross this 1.5-km stretch in G'gaon

Four lanes merge into one as the vehicles approach NH 8, causing a traffic nightmare.

If only cars had wings! Half-hour to cross this 1.5-km stretch in G'gaon

Driving through the road that divides sectors 17 and 18 in Gurgaon, adjacent to Udyog Vihar, is a headache for commuters, thanks to the widening work in progress.

Part of the stretch, towards Delhi-Gurgaon road, has been widened, allowing cars to move in four lanes. However, as it approaches NH 8, the road is wide enough only for a single lane. This creates a bottleneck that has been disrupting traffic for a long time. But that is not the only problem. To make matters worse, there are numerous cars parked at the mechanic shops on either side of the road, further eating up space. Then there is the incoming traffic from Udyog Vihar, which merges with the traffic on this road at two points.

“During peak hours, incoming vehicles from Udyog Vihar cause traffic to come to a standstill," said an auto driver Dayanand Singh. "There are traffic personnel present to tackle this but the inflow is just too much. And then this massive volume meets the bottleneck in the second half of the road, where it isn't wide enough."

Rachna Yadav, a resident of Palam Vihar, commutes to Cyber City every day. "The traffic on this road is always congested. The stretch is only 1.5 km long but it takes me almost half an hour to cross it."

Speaking to City Spidey, DCP Traffic Balbir Singh said, "We are aware of the issue of multiple lanes leading to one road creating bottlenecks at both ends. We are trying to speak to other authorities involved to solve the problem."
