Haryana: Among several progressive changes in the Marriage Registration Act, the government has decided to do away with the practice of requiring the presence of parents before the marriage registrar.

To simplify the process of issuing Marriage Registration Certificate to citizens, the government of Haryana has made amendments in the Marriage Registration Act and has decided to do away with the practice of requiring the presence of parents of both the bride and the groom before the marriage registrar.
Vivek Kalia, joint commissioner, Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG), told City Spidey, “The earlier practice was causing a lot of inconvenience as the pre and post-wedding residence of couples was different in most cases. This caused a lot of difficulty as the parents had to be present before the registrar as mandated by the Act.”
The applicants can now produce any two witnesses, not necessarily blood relatives, as mandated by the Marriage Registration Act. Other progressive changes allow owners of the marriage venues or banquet halls to inform the municipality concerned about a marriage taking place. The format for information is available on the MCG website as Annexure A.
A provision for an online option for the purpose would be made that would be integrated with the online marriage registration systems across other municipalities. “This will ensure that there is no duplicity of records, and that there is secure and authentic information on all marriages. Citizens will face no inconvenience or delays in getting their marriage registered,” said Kalia.
Kalia also added that the payment of registration fees had been made simpler. “The fees will now be accepted directly by the Citizen Felicitation Centres (CFC) at MCG office in Sector 34 and opposite the Civil Hospital,” he said.
