As soon as the MCD implements an order passed by the National Green Tribunal on April 18, you may end up paying a fine if you don't segregate household waste before passing it on to your garbage collector. NGT asked all three municipal commissioners of Delhi to submit a proposal before the court in this regard within a month. The tribunal also suggested a rebate in property tax for those who were consistent in providing segregated waste at resource point.
Earlier, Yogender Singh Mann, a senior official in charge of North and East Delhi municipal corporations, had informed City Spidey that the civic bodies had prepared a blueprint in this matter and that it would come into effect from April 1.
In April 2016, the Union Ministry of Environment eliminated the existing Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2000, and notified the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. As per the new rules, all waste generators have to segregate and store waste in three separate bins — biodegradable, non-biodegradable and domestic hazardous wastes — and hand over the segregated waste to waste collectors.
Residents of several societies have started segregating their household waste. In past few months, a couple of NGOs have organised awareness camps at Vasundhara Enclave, IP Extension and other parts of the city to educate residents on waste segregation.
