What do Palam Vihar residents do at 3 am? Wake up to store water

Imagine having to live without water for four days. That's exactly what residents of Gurgaon’s Palam Vihar, Block E, have been doing. But despite several meetings with officials, the crisis continues.

For the past three months, more than 350 families have had to depend on water tankers to fulfil their needs, shelling out hefty sums in the process.

The block was already facing the problem of low water pressure due to frequent power outrages, leading to shortage in supply as well.

However, instead of addressing the situation, both Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHVBN) and HUDA played the blame game, making matters worse.

“We are paying Rs 300 every day for water — that’s injustice. Despite speaking to all the officials, the problem persists. And with the summer on in full force, the situation couldn’t have gotten any worse,” said Ashok Mor, a resident.

Residents are waking up as early as 3 am to store water, as they were being supplied water at odd hours last week. Those living on higher floors were the worst hit because of the low pressure.

Residents are worried that if the situation continues, the tankers will take advantage of the situation and raise charges. “They will certainly do so — and again we’ll have to bear the brunt,” agreed SK Kapoor, another resident.

Vikas Malik, executive engineer, MCG, who had visited the area on April 20, said, "The water supply has been reduced from HUDA due to shifting of utilities to facilitate construction of underpasses on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. However, we have deployed two officials at the boosting station in Sector 22 to ensure equal distribution of water."

He added, “We’ll try to resolve the crisis within a week.”
