Noida's Disaster Management Cell (DMC) is all set to conduct earthquake evacuation drills in 101 schools in the city on April 27. The main event will be organised at the Mahamaya Balika Inter College in Sector 44. Rehearsals for the event, named Mega School Earthquake Evacuation Drill, have started in various schools across the city.

Limca Book of Records will be recording the event, as this is the first time such a drill has been organised in the country by a local authority on such a large scale.

The DMC held a meeting on April 24 with officials of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), in which the latter agreed to send one of its staff to each of the schools.

DR Raka Kumar, planning specialist and head of DCM Noida, told City Spidey that more than 1 lakh people, including students, teachers, staffs and resource personnel, were expected to participate in this mega drill. "If such drills are being conducted in schools, hospitals and large office premises and people are properly trained in safe evacuation techniques, many lives can be saved," he added.
