Dwarka: In the grip of darkness and fear... The stretch where the incident took place

Watch your back... you might just be the next victim. Dark stretches across Dwarka have become a serious threat to the safety and security of the residents.

On the evening of April 25, Ila Singh, a resident Defence Officers Apartments, Sector 4, faced a threatening situation while returning from her swimming class.

Here’s the victim’s account:

“At around 8 pm, I was returning home from my swimming session at Modern Convent School. All of a sudden, someone grabbed me from behind and then vanished into the darkness of the street. I was petrified... I began screaming and a nariyal wala, who usually sits beside the park in the area, came to my rescue. I have no idea what the man intended to do — to grope me or chain snatch — but the incident really shook me up.”

She continues, “The scary bit is the fact that this is a very busy area, as there’s a park in the vicinity. So, there are always people around, and yet this happened. It can happen to anybody. The civic authorities and the police must realise the gravity of the situation. There are so many children, women who go to the park during evenings — they are not safe!”

Ila further suggested, “There should be a check post in this area — or the patrolling in the area should be increased. The civic administration must ensure that the street is properly lit.”

Leena Dabiru, her friend from the society, said, “We will pursue the matter with the police and the civic bodies to do whatever is required to make the place safe for residents. Firstly, there should be proper lighting in the area, and secondly, patrolling should be increased. We have started discussing the situation with resident bodies and groups.”
